USK Karate Academy and its instructors are certified under the Tang Soo Do style of martial arts. Tang Soo Do is a modern composite Martial Art comprised of elements of Tae Kyun, Tai Chi, Ki Gong, Chinese Martial arts and an ancient form of Korean martial arts called Subak. Subak is the authentic historical martial art that dates back 2700 years.
Grandmaster Hwang Kee is acknowledged as one of the martial arts geniuses of the 20th century. He founded the Moo Duk Kwan (Institute of the Active Virtue of Stopping and Preventing Inner and Outer Conflict) in Seoul, Korea in 1945. USK Karate Academy was affiliated with this organization from 1997 to 2009. In 2009 USK Karate Academy began teaching the pure form of Tang Soo Do and retired from it's affiliation with the US Soo Bahk Do federation to better serve it's members. The curriculum at USK Karate Academy concentrates on the development of an upright character, wisdom, scholarship, mental and physical health and a thorough knowledge of military (self-defense) techniques and tactics. Its program for certifying teachers is the most challenging in the world, insuring the highest standards of instruction.
Master Pryor started studying Tang Soo Do in 1966 when he was 21 years old. When Founder Hwang Kee decided to start a formal organization in the U.S. in 1974 he selected Master Pryor to represent his interests in the formation of the organization. Master Pryor, along with others, created the structure and operating procedures for the Federation; served on the Board of Directors for 18 years; was the first treasurer; served as secretary, chairman, and chairman of the executive committee. He holds one of the few Letters of Commendation from founder Hwang Kee for his work. Master Pryor is a 7th Degree Midnight Blue Belt and is one of the most senior practitioners of this art in the U.S. In addition, he served as a Regional Examiner, placing him in charge of overseeing the quality of education in all Moo Duk Kwan schools in the southeast. In 2005 he was asked to serve on a senior advisory council whose pupose is to insure that proper Tang Soo Do values are demonstrated in all areas of the organizaiton. Master Pryor has owned several schools throughout his lifetime. In 1997 he founded USK Karate Academy and in 2009 he retired and passed the school along to his most senior student Master David Alvas
David Alvas began training in Tang Soo Do when he was four years old. He received his 1st degree Midnight Blue Belt at the age of thirteen, when he began assisting teaching. His dedication to the art led him to become a professional full-time instructor and manager for Master Pryor in late 2003, one year after he received his 3rd degree. Because of his dedication to the growth of Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan in South Florida, the Grand Master, H.C. Hwang, recognized his achievements with a National award at the 2006 National Championships. Master Alvas is also a Certified Personal Trainer and Conditioning Coach. He tested and passed for the rank of 4th Dan (Master) in January 2007. Masters David & Jillian Alvas run USK Karate Academy together to better promote a family environment.
Master Alvas has been training in Tang Soo Do since she was 11 years old. She has been teaching martial arts since 1998 and graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a degree in ESE. She was previously a teacher at a Broward County Elementary School and is now the Director of our M.A.S.S.T.E.R. Program and studio manager. Jillian and David Alvas were married in December of 2007. |
